The original text is in German, which I understand only about 70%.
I wanted to sing the songs in my own language Dutch.
I found online translations into English, but they are not "singable", the words do not match the rhythm.
So I tried translating some songs myself. Fun to do! I do not claim that the translations are good, although I am fairly pleased with them myself. Maybe this is useful for others, so I put it online.
There are quite a lot of YouTube clips of Schubert songs online, performed by famous singers and pianists. There are also clips with just the piano accompaniment, if you want to practice.
Like everybody says, practicing helps. But I was quite surprised anyway that after a fair amount of practice I actually increased my level from "total failure" to "village choir".
